I looked forward to this shoot for months, and when it arrived we had the perfect fall light in one of Carissa’s beautiful boulevard gardens! She designs and builds kitchen gardens for all kinds of different spaces, and is a font of knowledge about everything from companion planting to cover cropping.

Leatherwork Branding Photography
One of my favourite parts of working with makers is photographing tools, and let me tell you, leatherwork branding photography offers no shortage of chances to shoot incredible tools. From curved knives and weighty pricking forks to Alex’s custom made stitching horse, they were all so interesting to see in action as we documented the process of making one of his beautiful leather briefcases.
I’ve got another leatherwork branding photography session on the books for next month (this one focused on garments and shoes! Run by queers!) and I’m so stoked about it. Almost my entire shot list is made up of the wild machines in the shop. Can’t wait.

When Vancouver poet Aaron Chan came to me for new author headshots, I had a vision for the light I wanted to use for the shoot. I hoped to time it perfectly so that the lowering sun would shine up False Creek and into Strathcona, lighting up the trees on Union Street with that golden-hour glow. AND IT WORKED.

Lately I’ve been really enjoying playing around shooting food. Summer is prime season for it with all the colourful fruit and and bright accoutrements, everything from dishes and cutlery to plants and flowers to add in (the sweet peas in my garden and some of my favourite props).

I got the scans back from this session while I was waiting at the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal to head to the Island for the weekend, but I was so antsy to see them that I downloaded three rolls worth to my phone and incurred a not-insignificant data overage charge so that I didn’t have to wait three days to know how they turned out. I regret nothing. I love these photos!
