High-end local foods, homemade treats and the most amazing kitchen = perfect new addition to the Victoria food scene.
Strategy
Kith + Kin is a new business launched in December 2021 by three sisters, Hind, Nadia and Sarah Masri out of Victoria. They curate beautiful, luxurious and local charcuterie boxes, boards and grazing tables perfect for girls’ nights, weddings and everything in between. The focus on local foods is a huge part of their business, so they wanted to reflect the unique products with unique photos. It’s one of the primary things that drew them to film photography.
Session Planning
The sisters create their boxes in their home in an absolute dream of kitchen. It has a bright white marble island and natural light coming in from all directions. We’d showcase the variety of offerings by shooting both omnivore and vegan boards, along with special add-ons like local preserves and spiced nuts (do NOT skip the spiced nuts. I mean it).
I picked a small collection of dishes–simple, cohesive but not matchy–and styled the scene with local wines, fresh flowers and beautifully shot cookbooks. The space exudes casual elegance. The warmth and depth of Portra 800 film only adds to the feeling of being invited into a high-end yet welcoming gathering.
Shoot Day
The day was overcast, which meant there was clean, diffuse light coming in through the windows and skylights. It was perfect for creating saturated colours and clean edges. Nadia hand-modelled for me. This added a human element and emphasized key products, such as Country Bee Honey and house-made candied orange slices.
The result is a collection of bright, elegant photos that will help Kith + Kin both stand out in the Victoria food scene and emphasize the local relationships that make their business special.
